Project Description:
The homeowners of this Lake Washington home not only wanted to give their new home a face lift but also wanted to lift the house to gain a more spacious lower level that opens out onto their western facing lake front property. The exterior brick facade was removed to make way for tight knot cedar siding; hardi panel and a wood screen will complete the modern exterior look. The interior spaces were reorganized to produce a more efficient floor plan layout. The living room ceiling was vaulted to bring in more light and help define the space. A new open stair was added to connect the two floors, transforming the dark basement into a true lower floor plan. To quote Mies van der Rohe, “Less is More” when it came to removing the existing lake front deck. The deck was very large and cast dark shadows into the lower level making this space cold and uninviting. By removing the existing large deck for a smaller more intimate deck off the dining room, the lower level became more inviting and usable for the owners and their guests. The existing master bedroom was also made smaller to allow for a new private covered deck complete with heat lamps allowing the owners to sit outside and drink coffee on a rainy winter day. Future plans involve building an outdoor lake front living space, complete with a BBQ, fire pit and mini theater.
